Seeing is Deceiving is now live in paperback. As in, you can buy it. Right now. And apparently have it in your hot little hands by Wednesday, at least here in the US, with Prime, etc etc.
Damn, Amazon is on a tear. Trying to impress someone?
Anyway, you’d think after doing this for so long I’d know all the stuff but no! This being the first time I’ve actually had a paperback of a book available/submitted at the same time as the ebook, it’s the first time I’ve found out that the paperback can get processed this quick and can go on sale earlier than the pre-order!
At this time of year – still 2022 around these parts – it’s tempting to do one of those retrospective doohickeys, you know, look back at all the great words that were written in your blog.
But we know better than that, don’t we? We do. It’s not like I have a lot of blog entries to peruse. So while 2022 started in what I felt was a positive way, it’s ended in a sort of… medium way. But better than it could have, for sure, because…
Honestly the editing felt like more of a drag than the writing at times, but it’s done and even better, I recently invested in some new software that should help me get the book formatted and ready for publication quicker than ever. So that’s next! No, it won’t be out today (ha!) but I have a good feeling about January. I really do!
It’s a big book (surprise, surprise) and it took way too fucking long but it’s done. So yay! That’s coming closer. It’s real. Itshappening.gif.
Also, let’s be real
I have to remind myself that despite publishing one thing in 2022 and finishing one other thing, that was, in fact, more productive than I’ve been in years.
And I know that I’ve said this before, but man, 2022 sucked in a few very specific ways (and is, in fact, still sucky in some) so the fact that anything came out is good.
What’s up for 2023?
As always, I have plans. As always, they may not come to fruition! But it’s good to have plans.
First thing, obbbbbviously, is publishing Seeing is Deceiving. It will be on Amazon; it will be on Gumroad (and maybe elsewhere) as a PDF and/or other file for those who aren’t Amazon friendly. It will be a paperback for the two of you who want to buy a physical copy.
Then – honestly, unsure. I’ve got thoughts. I’ve got ideas. We’ll see which way the muse takes me. Hopefully roughly and from behind.
That’ll do! Gonna go off and (gasp) work on formatting the book. Woo!
Happy New Year, everyone. Here’s to surviving 2023.
And when it does it tends to happen all at once, as they say.
I can’t fully disclose here because, well because, but suffice to say September and October ended up being a little nuts. And then November? Let’s just say I looked at the date as I sat down to write this and went what?
Time is passing way too quick, people.
Editing has stalled. Not because of any inherent issue with editing, just with time and my inclination, because of the because circumstances up above. Things have happened, personal and stress-inducing things, that have left me much more interested in basically meditating and keeping my mind clean of all thought vs. getting into the book in the last two (sigh) months.
Sorry. You’re waiting, you’re relatively patient, and I appreciate that.
What can I say? I will slog onwards. About 50K to go, editing wise, but man, that seems like a lot right now. Wish me luck, etc!
A month ago (by complete coincidence, but time does fly) I posted this to Instagram…
And not long after I sent out a newsletter. Yep, I still send those. Nope, I don’t have a sign-up right now. Yep, I am an idiot.
If you missed either of those, though, here I am again saying it: the actual writing part (which I hear is important) of the sequel to Practice to Deceive… is done.
[pause for thunderous applause, mutters of “Finally” and “What does he want, a medal?”]
Er, but no, the book isn’t out yet.
What’s left to do then?
Editing. Boy, this has been slow. But I am editing, slowly chipping away. I tend to write very much close to final (partly why I’m so slow) but still, it’s been slower than I’d liked. Trying to up the pace.
Formatting, etc etc. Kindle version, PDF version, etc etc blah blah it’s very dull but it does take time.
Cover making. I don’t really want to pay a lot for a cover design, or have the awkward conversations around it so as I’ve done with other books, I’m cover designing myself. Naturally, I’m making it harder than it needs to be. Please ignore the hastily put together mock cover on the just-published-today-page on this site. It’ll be nothing like that.
Publishing. You know, pressing the buttons and doing the thing.
Back in July I was blissfully, stupidly telling myself I’d get allllll of that done in August. HAH! Well, here I am blissfully, stupidly telling myself (and you) that I’m… hoping… to get a bunch of this done before end of September. (This year.)
I mean, compared to the previous, um, near-decade it’s not that long to wait, right?
So, it’s possible I deleted your registration here on the site. If I did, sorry. Why? Because basically I fielded hundreds of bots that were registering new accounts. I finally got around to adding a captcha on the registration page, but for security, I deleted just about every account I didn’t recognize.
(For reference, I was at over 600 users, now I’m sub 20, which is more believable!)
In a few cases I recognized your username/email and left your account alone, but in more cases I deleted. Based on previous comments I recreated a number of accounts; they will be getting an email from me (automated) letting you know there’s a new account.
For reference, the usernames in the screenshot below are all that exist on the site now. If you recognize yourself below, check to make sure you can login; if you can’t, you’ve got an email from me. If your username isn’t listed below, you’ll have to register again. Sorry.
Fucking bots. This is why we can’t have nice things, etc.
It is still also available on Gumroad, if you’re okay with a PDF and don’t mind slightly different formatting. As this is a novella rather than a novel, I’d totally get that choice. Also, you can save a couple of bucks on Gumroad vs. the ‘Zon, to make my cut from the sale a bit more in my favor.
Just pushed the button to submit The One I Want to the Kindle store. As mentioned it’s going to be a buck more over there, mostly to cover Amazon’s higher fees. If you want to save a buck and gimme a little higher share, Gumroad is still available as an option.
With Amazon’s usual checking procedures hopefully The One I Want will be live over there inside a day or two, worst mid-week. I’ll post again when it’s up.
As usual it’s published worldwide, so you should be able to see it in a store that works for you; if you don’t, please let me know so I can investigate.
Oh, it’s ebook only btw. I don’t think it’d be big enough to be a paperback. If you prefer a printed form, best option is to pick it up at Gumroad and print it yourself (you have both Letter and A4 paper options to choose from too, fancy).
… don’t go back and look at any other February 1st entries because I will feel horrendously embarrassed by the span of time between the last thing I released and this thanks …
We’re doing something different here
The One I Want is making its debut on Gumroad, not on Amazon. And there’s a few reasons for that.
The cover is highly likely to change, and I like to go out with a final, great cover on Amazon. (Learnt my lesson on Practice to Deceive.)
I’ve had feedback from a few peeps that they had trouble buying on Amazon, so wanted to ensure this (DRM free, PDF only) option was available from the start.
It’s actually going to be (shhh!) cheaper on Gumroad than Amazon. It’s priced at $4* right now on Gumroad; it’ll be at least $5 on Amazon. (I’m likely rejiggering all my prices, to be honest.)
Er, the Amazon version isn’t ready and I wanted to keep my promise and get it out in February. So there.
Above and beyond all that, I’m also able to offer two different versions of the same story on Gumroad. As it’s a plain ol’ PDF, you get both ‘Letter’ sized and ‘A4’ sized. It’s purely for those of you who like to print stuff. I know you’re out there.
Now; if you’re a die-hard Kindle person, you can still import the PDF to Kindle if you like or you can wait a little while and it’ll make its way to Amazon. You’ll pay like a buck more, but it’ll be in your Kindle library, easy to download everywhere, still available to you if your backups die, etc.
Oh and of course, Amazon has reviews. So that’d be nice.
With all that said
The One I Want isn’t entirely my typical kind of story, but then it’s entirely atypical either. It’s got steamy sex. It’s got disguise. It’s got all the latex thingummies and doodads.
What it doesn’t have is a transformation scene. It’s implied (this is a male-to-female scenario, spoilers and all that) but it’s not shown ‘on-page’. For some, that might be a bummer. If so, I wanted you to know up front.
We’re done! With one thing. And hey, it’s the thing I said I was gonna finish this month so… yay me! Be proud of yourself, ego. ID? You get the drift.
I am talking about The One I Want, which is the easier to type/say title for what I referred to before as You’re The One That I Want. Probably less chance of accidentally selling it to Grease fans, eh? (Although Google may lead them here anyway? OK, if you’re here looking for fan fiction where Sandra Dee is impersonated by Rizzo, uh, sorry, but good idea! You should write it yourself.)
Anyway, as I desperate pad a one line update to a third para you should know that YES! This will still be available to buy this month (January) or at the worst, early February. I am thinking about putting it on Gumroad first for a limited period and then dropping it on the Zon, mostly because I don’t have a cover yet… but we’ll see.
Final word count ended up higher than I’d had before at about 14K, which is nice. There were extensive rewrites that I think help the thing overall. I really hope you like it.
With that, back to Seeing is Deceiving and getting that bastard wrestled into submission. But keep your peepers peeled for updates on when this thing’s out.
Oh btw, I’m on Instagram these days. If you want to stalk my every move, actually you’ll still need to make more of an effort – but I do throw out updates on there every now and again. I’m here if you wanna do the follow thing.
